Preserving the History of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley

Black Bottom and Paradise Valley were two predominately black neighborhoods that once existed on Detroit's lower east side. From the 1920s to the 1960s, they were the hub of African-American culture in Detroit. Black factory workers from the South settled into the residential Black Bottom and entertained themselves at the commercial Paradise Valley. Urban renewal efforts during the 1950s and 60s decimated the two neighborhoods. Present-day Ford Field, Comerica Park, and Lafayette Park are on the former site of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley.
